FLU SHOTS – ARE THEY NECESSARY IN 2013?

Flu shots are generally given for a disease called Influenza, which is known as flu in common. Influenza is a disease whose symptoms may seem less serious, but it may cause some serious health problems and if not treated in time it may sometimes even lead to death. It is caused by the viruses of RNA, belonging to the family of Orthomyxoviridae, the influenza virus. It is the most infectious disease among mammals and birds. Sore throat, chills, muscle pain, headache, fatigue/weakness, fever and general discomfort are the most common symptoms of the ailment. Generally it is confused with other flu-diseases most commonly with the common cold. The viruses may change each season, and this is why CDC does critical analysis every year to see the changes in the current circulating viruses so that appropriate vaccines may be suggested. In the year 2013, CDC has not found any different virus from the previous year’s, except for the influenza B viruses.

The vaccination against flu “Flu Shots” have been made available in developed countries. TIV (trivalent influenza vaccine) that contains inactivated and purified antigens from three viral strains is the most common human vaccine. Its reactivity is very low and there is no risk of disease transmission. There are three types of flu shots available which are meant for different age groups: i) Regular flu shot which is meant for small children of 6 months and above, ii) Intradermal flu shot which should be given to the people between 18 to 64 years of age, iii) High dose flu shot for the people of 65 years and above.

Some of them are of the view that the flu shots may cause flu. This is a great misconception that people may have. Initially the shots do produce some discomfort or fever, but it is just the reaction that goes inside the body and leads us to feel some problem. These effects last for a day or two, and after that one feels comfortable and relieved, and is prevented against flu. Most of the mothers have these misconceptions and are afraid to vaccinate their children, but the fact is that flu is the most dangerous disease for children till the age of 5-6 years and prevention against it is an absolute requirement. The resistivity of a new born baby or a child of 5 year is not too strong, and at this age the disease makes its impact the most which, if not controlled in time may be fatal.
In certain cases these flu shots must be taken after consulting a physician. These conditions may include the people having allergy to eggs, having a medical history of Guillain Barré Syndrome etc.

Flu shots are necessary, especially for the children under the age of 5 years to develop the desired resistance against flu. The vaccination will not only protect but will ensure precaution to their families as well.
